PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that a section of westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) will be closed in the Grays Ferry neighborhood of Philadelphia this weekend for critical bridge deck repairs.

The closure, which spans from the 34th Street off-ramp to the University Avenue on-ramp, will begin at 9:00 PM on Friday, June 6, and last until 5:00 AM on Monday, June 9. During this time, the 34th Street ramp to westbound I-76 will also be closed and detoured.

Key ramps, including the University Avenue ramp and South Street ramp to westbound I-76, will remain open to traffic. However, motorists traveling on I-76 West will be redirected via a regional detour using I-95 North and I-676 West (Vine Street Expressway). Local traffic will follow a separate detour through Grays Ferry Avenue and surrounding streets to rejoin westbound I-76.

PennDOT has stated that the repairs will focus on removing deteriorated concrete, patching compromised sections, and resurfacing the bridge deck to improve durability and prevent future damage. The work is part of a broader effort to maintain safe travel for the corridor, which carries heavy daily commuter and freight traffic.

Weather permitting, an additional weekend closure of the same section may be scheduled in May to complete ongoing repairs. The operation is being coordinated with city officials, transportation agencies, and other stakeholders to minimize disruption.

Motorists are urged to plan ahead and avoid the closure areas to reduce potential delays and congestion on detoured routes and local streets.
