PHILADELPHIA, PA — Historic Germantown will launch a series of free public events beginning Tuesday, April 7, offering residents and visitors access to cultural programs, outdoor activities, and historic sites across the neighborhood.

The season-long programming is designed to increase public engagement with Germantown’s historic houses, museums and green spaces through events running from April through October.

The initiative includes activities hosted across the consortium’s 20 member sites, including Awbury Arboretum, Cliveden, Johnson House, Stenton and Wyck Historic House and Garden.

The first program, Firefly Hours, begins April 7 and will take place twice monthly from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at rotating locations.

Organizers said the series will feature activities such as quilting, painting, nature walks, crafts, lawn games and book readings, with the opening event held at Allens Lane Art Center.

The program will include a multi-session fiber arts series with activities such as stencil printing and weaving, along with a community quilting event.

A second initiative, Community Festivals in Historic Germantown, will begin April 18 and continue through October, with events hosted at different sites highlighting local history and the nation’s upcoming semiquincentennial.

The opening festival will take place at Stenton with Dinah Day, which commemorates Dinah, a formerly enslaved woman who secured her freedom in 1776 and later helped protect the property during the Revolutionary War.

The event will include a commemorative ceremony, historical lecture, storytelling and guided tours focused on Dinah’s life.

On April 19, the Green Space Stamp Rally will return with a tree-focused scavenger hunt running through July 11.

Participants will visit 18 locations, identify designated trees and record their findings in a passport booklet, with prizes available for those who complete at least 10 sites.

Passport booklets will be available at Historic Germantown’s office at 5501 Germantown Ave. and participating locations.

Beginning May 9, the Second Saturdays program will provide free admission to select historic sites on the second Saturday of each month through October 10.

Participating locations will offer additional programming, including workshops, guided tours, yoga sessions and birdwatching activities.

The same day will also mark the launch of “26 Tours in 2026,” a yearlong series of guided walking tours.

Spring offerings will include a tree-focused tour at Historic Fair Hill, a tour of the Wayne Junction Historic District and a landscape tour of West Central Germantown.

“Historic Germantown’s spring programming is designed to invite people in … to experience this neighborhood not just as a place of history, but as a living, breathing community,” said Executive Director Tuomi Forrest.

Organizers said many of the tours are free, though some require advance registration.
