HAVERFORD, PA — Michael B. Kim, an alumnus of Haverford College, founder-chairman of one of Asia’s largest private equity firms, and best-selling author, has been appointed Chair of the Haverford College Board of Managers. Scheduled to assume his new role on July 1, Kim steps into leadership as Haverford embarks on an ambitious strategic plan aimed at expanding its endowment by 50% within seven years.
Kim, a member of the Class of 1985, previously served on the Board from 2005-17. He succeeds Charles G. Beever ’74, whose tenure included chairmanship from 2019 to 2024. “I look forward to returning to the board and working with Wendy Raymond and the College leadership, with a renewed focus on our core mission of academic excellence, securing financial stability, and supporting our special, values-based community,” said Kim.
Haverford President Wendy E. Raymond praised Kim’s appointment, lauding his leadership roles in organizations such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Carnegie Hall, and Harvard Business School, where he earned an MBA. “His passion for the liberal arts, ethical leadership, and Haverford’s distinctive place in higher education make him an ideal leader for Haverford College,” said Raymond.
Kim is chairman of the North Asia private equity firm MBK Partners, which manages over $30 billion. The firm has offices in Seoul, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, and Tokyo. Kim attributes his leadership approach to “TIE – teamwork, integrity, and excellence,” qualities he believes resonate with Haverford’s ethos.
The leadership transition comes at a crucial time for Haverford. The college is preparing for a comprehensive fundraising campaign in support of the Haverford 2030: Better Learning, Broader Impact strategic plan. This initiative aims to establish new foundational elements like an Institute for Ethical Inquiry and Leadership, as well as features such as action-based learning beyond the classroom and enhanced career services.
Outgoing Chairman Beever expressed confidence in Kim’s leadership. “His self-made success is matched only by his commitment to Haverford, and I couldn’t be more excited to see where Haverford will go under his leadership,” said Beever.
In addition to his business acumen, Kim is a published author. His 2020 novel, “Offerings,” is a coming-of-age story that explores the tension between “art and commerce, conscience and obligation,” as described by journalist and author Malcolm Gladwell. The book is currently being adapted into a film.
Haverford’s Board of Managers, which meets four times a year and currently has 30 members, is responsible for establishing policies related to governance, study courses, and the management of the College’s resources. Kim’s first meeting as Chair is scheduled for October.
