PHILADELPHIA, PA — Giant skeletons, flying ghosts and eerie lights are taking over the Delaware River waterfront as Cavanaugh’s River Deck transforms into a Halloween destination filled with spooky decorations, themed cocktails, fall comfort food and late-night entertainment.

The popular waterfront venue has extended its season for 2026 with the return of Haunted Pier, a Halloween pop-up featuring animated monsters, fog effects, photo opportunities, and a full calendar of parties through Nov. 1.

Celebrating its 22nd year, Cavanaugh’s River Deck is giving visitors another reason to enjoy the waterfront after summer ends, combining its familiar views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge with an elaborate Halloween makeover.

The transformation begins with a new seasonal bar surrounded by a haunted forest setting, complete with decorative lighting and an elevated DJ and VIP area. Throughout the venue, visitors will encounter animatronic creatures, oversized skeletons, and ghostly figures suspended above the deck.

A giant flying skeleton greets guests along the main walkway, while fog machines and additional decorations create an eerie atmosphere. Pumpkins, cornstalks, fall flowers, and Halloween characters complete the seasonal setting.

Guests can also pose for photographs at the Monster Mash display on the main deck, where the Benjamin Franklin Bridge provides a distinctive Philadelphia backdrop.

The Haunted Pier theme draws inspiration from an original fictional legend created around the Delaware River’s maritime history.

According to the attraction’s story, a mysterious vessel called The Red October disappeared during a storm in the 1800s, leaving behind tales of glowing red lanterns, unexplained footsteps, and ghostly sailors returning to the waterfront each Halloween.

The fictional tale also incorporates Philadelphia’s familiar “Red October” baseball tradition, giving the attraction a distinctly local twist.

While the ghost story provides the atmosphere, the seasonal menu offers visitors a different kind of Halloween experience.

The bar’s themed cocktails include Vampire Punch, made with vodka, cranberry, soda and lime; Witch’s Brew, combining tequila, melon liqueur, soda and lemon; and Zombie Fizz, featuring orange vodka, grenadine and Sprite.

Other selections include Ghostly Lemonade, made with honey whiskey, lemonade and soda, and Dark and Spooky, featuring spiced rum, ginger beer and lime.

A nonalcoholic Black Widow Mocktail combines cola, grenadine and lime.

The kitchen has also introduced a menu of fall comfort foods, including grilled cheese with tomato soup, chili and chips, open-faced grilled cheese with tomato and bacon, and chili cheese dogs.

Additional seasonal offerings include brown sugar and cinnamon candied bacon, sweet potato waffle fries with maple-Chantilly cream, candied apples, and Cracker Jacks.

Alongside the decorations and food, Haunted Pier will feature a series of October events incorporating Cavanaugh’s established nightlife programming.
