AUDUBON, PA — Globus Medical Inc. acquired Duke University-incubated Higgs Boson Health, adding software developers, artificial-intelligence scientists and digital-health technology as the medical-device company expands its platform beyond surgical products and into patient care, outcomes and analytics.
Globus Medical (NYSE: GMED) did not disclose the purchase price or other financial terms of the transaction.
Durham, North Carolina-based Higgs Boson develops digital technology focused on the healthcare experience. Globus plans to integrate the acquired technology into its surgical-intelligence operations, connecting patient information and outcomes data across the course of care.
The acquisition also brings Higgs Boson’s software and AI personnel into Globus Medical, according to the Audubon-based company.
David Paul, Globus Medical’s founder and executive chairman, said the added teams will support the company’s effort to create a more integrated digital healthcare environment for patients and provide clinicians with real-time information and surgical intelligence.
The longer-term objective is “getting to 95% good outcomes at 10 years for all musculoskeletal surgeries,” Paul said.
President and Chief Executive Officer Keith Pfeil characterized the transaction as an expansion of the company’s broader technology ecosystem, with Higgs Boson’s products becoming part of its surgical-intelligence business.
The technology is intended to bring “outcomes and analytics in a closed-loop manner that fosters continuous learning,” Pfeil said, while integrating data across the patient’s care journey.
Globus Medical develops technology for musculoskeletal care. The Higgs Boson acquisition extends that strategy further into software, AI and longitudinal patient data as the company seeks to connect surgical technology with information generated before, during and after procedures.
