PHILADELPHIA, PA — Drivers in South Philadelphia should prepare for overnight detours next week as PennDOT advances critical bridge repair work along Interstate 95.
PennDOT announced that barrier installation will close the Front Street ramp to northbound I-95 on Wednesday, February 11, and Thursday, February 12, as part of a $37.4 million project aimed at repairing aging interstate bridges and maintaining safety along key travel corridors.
During the nighttime closures, motorists will be detoured using Oregon Avenue and Columbus Boulevard to reach northbound I-95. PennDOT said drivers should expect backups and delays in the area and are urged to allow extra travel time. All work is weather dependent.
The ramp closure is tied to a broader bridge rehabilitation effort that includes repairs to deteriorated bridge decks, superstructure steel, concrete beams, bridge railings, guiderails, and overhead sign supports. Crews will also replace expansion joints, repair substructure concrete, reset bearings, clean bridge seats, and remove debris beneath bridge spans.
Additional work under the contract includes cleaning and repainting 11 overhead steel sign structures and upgrading roadway lighting to LED luminaires to improve visibility and efficiency.
IEW Construction Group Inc. of Hamilton, New Jersey, is serving as the general contractor on the federally funded project.
