WILMINGTON, DE — The Delaware State Police announced the arrest of a  26-year-old Philadelphia resident on gun offenses early Sunday morning.

Shafi Meachum has been charged with Carrying a Concealed Firearm (Felony) and Possession of a Firearm While Under the Influence.

The criminal complaint alleges that on July 9, 2023, at approximately 7:34 a.m., troopers responded to I-95 northbound in the area of Darley Road for a man with a firearm in a black Jeep Grand Cherokee on the shoulder of the highway. The man, identified as Shafi Meachum, had been in the backseat of the vehicle with the door open and his arm hanging out, which prompted a passing on-duty New Castle County paramedic to stop and check on him. The paramedic observed a firearm fall from Meachum’s lap and requested police. Meachum was taken into custody by troopers and was found to be under the influence of alcohol. The loaded firearm was recovered from the backseat.

Meachum was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on a $600 unsecured bond.

Information, a criminal complaint, or an arrest is not a declaration of guilt. A suspect, arrestee, or defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
