Extensive Roadwork on U.S. 422 to Affect Montgomery County Commuters

Traffic, flagging

LOWER POTTSGROVE TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has unveiled plans for a major construction initiative on U.S. 422, signaling a week of potential delays for commuters in Montgomery County. The $83.6 million project aims to reconstruct and enhance approximately 2.1 miles of the expressway, including the replacement of key bridges between the Sanatoga Interchange and Porter Road in Lower Pottsgrove Township.

Starting Monday, April 22, through Thursday, April 25, drivers will encounter lane and shoulder closures from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on eastbound U.S. 422 between Keim Street and Evergreen Road. This is part of the shoulder reconstruction efforts that will also see westbound closures from 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard, extending through Friday, April 26.

Additionally, Sanatoga Road will experience lane closures with flagging from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, to facilitate bridge construction. In a more disruptive measure, controlled rock blasting for drainage construction will necessitate intermittent 15-minute traffic stoppages and paces in both directions on U.S. 422, between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard, from Wednesday, April 24, through Friday, April 26, between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.

These operations are critical for the safety of both motorists and construction workers, aiming to mitigate the impact of excavation activities on traffic flow. PennDOT advises travelers to budget extra time for their journeys through these areas to accommodate the expected slowdowns, emphasizing that all scheduled work is contingent on favorable weather conditions.

The ambitious Section M1B project seeks not only to reconstruct U.S. 422 but also to realign certain sections for better horizontal curve radii, shoulder widths, and vertical clearance, thereby enhancing overall travel safety and efficiency. Key structural improvements include the replacement of a culvert at Sprogels Run and a single-span bridge over Porter Road with a new two-span bridge. Moreover, the bridge over Sanatoga Road and Sanatoga Creek is slated for reconstruction and widening, further contributing to the project’s comprehensive scope.
