MORGANTOWN, PA — Eastern Technologies Inc. is introducing a phosphorus-free line of industrial water treatment chemicals as tighter discharge limits and supply pressures push facilities to reduce reliance on phosphorus-based scale and corrosion control.
The Morgantown-based company, part of Sylmar, launched four COOLGARD Non-Phosphorus formulations for industrial cooling and process water systems. The products will be sold through ETI’s distributor network.
Phosphorus has long been used in industrial water treatment to control scale and corrosion, but facilities can face restrictions on the amount discharged in wastewater. ETI noted that discharge permits can regulate total phosphorus, meaning phosphonate-based treatment programs may contribute to a facility’s permitted phosphorus load even when orthophosphate is not being added.
The new line is intended to give water treatment companies an alternative when customers need to reduce phosphorus without abandoning scale and corrosion protection.
“The hard part was never taking the phosphorus out. It was holding scale and corrosion control once it was gone,” ETI Senior Product Line Manager Jim Sanford said.
ETI tested the formulations against phosphorus-based programs already used by its partners, according to the company.
COOLGARD 14505 and 14510 are designed for systems operating under standard conditions, with the company positioning them as lower-cost options for customers transitioning away from phosphorus.
COOLGARD 14515 and 14520 incorporate zinc for systems requiring additional corrosion inhibition or operating with more challenging water conditions. The 14510 and 14520 formulations also use a tagged polymer to support monitoring.
ETI developed the four products using performance testing and cost-in-use analysis. The phosphorus-free formulations will complement rather than replace the company’s existing phosphorus-based cooling-water products, allowing treatment providers to select chemistry based on operating conditions and discharge requirements.
The product launch also broadens the water-treatment chemistry developed within Sylmar for distribution through its operating businesses and commercial partners.
“Water treaters are being asked to protect their customers’ equipment and cut total phosphorus at the same time, while managing cost through supply chains they cannot rely on,” Sylmar Water Treatment Chief Operating Officer Kevin Donaldson said.
The COOLGARD Non-Phosphorus line is available through ETI’s distributor partners.
