EnerSys Targets 2027 Launch for More Efficient Broadband Power

EnerSys

READING, PA — EnerSys (NYSE: ENS) is targeting a 2027 commercial launch for a new broadband network power system designed to reduce electricity consumption and simplify equipment maintenance as cable operators expand network capacity and face increasing operating costs.

The Reading-based energy technology company has completed key hardware and software development milestones for its Alpha XM Edge power system, which uses a digital switch-mode architecture to supply power to equipment installed throughout cable broadband networks.

The system is designed to achieve peak power-conversion efficiency of up to 96%, subject to validation and qualification testing.

That efficiency target is central to the product’s development as broadband operators seek to accommodate higher power demands at network locations outside central facilities without proportionate increases in electricity consumption.

EnerSys is developing the system as an alternative to earlier ferro-resonant power platforms, with the digital architecture intended to reduce conversion losses across a broader range of operating conditions.

The company expects to begin limited commercial availability in spring 2027, followed by a broader rollout in summer 2027. Both milestones depend on successful completion of development, validation, qualification and production-readiness activities.

Expanded customer field evaluations are planned for fall 2026.

Beyond energy efficiency, the Alpha XM Edge system incorporates modular components designed for replacement by field technicians, potentially reducing the complexity of routine maintenance and repairs.

Its architecture uses keyed, field-replaceable functional components intended to simplify servicing equipment deployed across geographically dispersed broadband networks.

The system also incorporates embedded sensors and operational data capabilities, with mobile and web-based configuration and diagnostic tools planned for the initial commercial release.

Those features are intended to give network operators greater visibility into equipment performance, operating conditions and maintenance requirements.

A configurable design will accommodate different outside plant applications, reducing reliance on multiple dedicated power-system variants as network requirements change.

John Hewitt, vice president of communications for the Americas within EnerSys’ Network & Infrastructure Solutions business, said operators are balancing higher network demands against energy expenses and maintenance constraints.

“The Alpha XM Edge power system is being designed to address those demands through higher conversion efficiency, simpler serviceability and greater visibility into system performance,” Hewitt said.

The company is conducting validation tests covering power-conversion performance, automatic transfer from utility power to standby operation, redundant power modules and protection against electrical surges, overcurrent and short circuits.

Additional testing addresses communications, system configuration, modular maintenance and field diagnostics.

Current development activities also include system integration, customer technical engagement, software completion and preparations for manufacturing.

EnerSys displayed a development-stage Alpha XM Edge system at SCTE TechExpo26, held September 29 through October 1 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

The demonstration incorporated the power system into an outdoor network enclosure with supporting energy storage, illustrating its intended configuration for broadband infrastructure deployments.

The Alpha XM Edge extends EnerSys’ Alpha power-system portfolio, which has supplied equipment for broadband outside plant networks for more than four decades.

Its planned introduction reflects the company’s emphasis on improving energy efficiency and field operations as cable operators increase the capacity and complexity of their access networks.
