NORTH EAST, MD — The Cecil College Foundation has announced the creation of the Jean Mortenson Scholarship, an endowed fund designed to support aspiring nurses enrolled in Cecil College’s Associate of Science in Nursing program. This scholarship honors the legacy of Jean Mortenson, whose lifelong dedication to nursing serves as a beacon of inspiration for future generations.

Jean Mortenson’s journey into nursing began in her formative years in a modest Pennsylvania town. Inspired by the nursing stories shared by her best friend’s mother, Mortenson’s passion for the profession was ignited at the age of 12. Despite the initial allure of a career as a telephone operator, her interests shifted toward nursing, a choice solidified during a high school internship with a local medical practitioner.

Mortenson’s resolve was tested early on when she encountered a traumatic injury case. However, her commitment to nursing never faltered, leading her to pursue training at Hamot Hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she formed a lifelong friendship with a fellow student. Her career later blossomed at Warren State Hospital, where she found fulfillment in mental health care. Mortenson’s career spanned pediatrics, surgery, and mental health, showcasing her versatility and dedication to patient care.

The scholarship established by Mark Mortenson and Heidi Iuvino, Jean’s children, aims to continue her legacy by supporting students who embody her passion and commitment. The Jean Mortenson Scholarship offers financial assistance to nursing students at Cecil College, with eligible applicants required to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75. This initiative is not bound by residency restrictions, making it accessible to a wide pool of aspiring nurses.
