WEST READING, PA — Customers Bancorp (NYSE: CUBI) said its subsidiary, Customers Bank, entered a multiyear strategic collaboration with OpenAI to expand artificial intelligence tools across its commercial banking operations.
The bank said the initiative is intended to support lending, deposits, and payments operations as part of a broader effort to become what it described as an AI-enabled regional bank.
Customers Bank said the collaboration expands a relationship that began in 2023 when the bank deployed ChatGPT Enterprise internally.
According to the company, approximately 75% of employees currently use OpenAI-powered tools.
President and Chief Executive Officer Sam Sidhu said the bank has spent the past year building governance and operational systems intended to support broader AI deployment.
“We expect a fundamental re-engineering of how Customers Bank operates,” Sidhu said.
The bank said the collaboration includes direct engagement with OpenAI engineering and technical teams to develop AI systems tailored to the bank’s internal processes and infrastructure rather than relying on standard software products.
Customers Bank said planned AI applications include automating portions of lending workflows such as document collection, credit memorandum preparation, legal documentation, and collateral monitoring.
The company also said it plans to use AI to streamline digital onboarding and account setup for deposit customers.
In payments, the bank said it intends to expand AI capabilities tied to cubiX, its proprietary payments platform, including the development of AI-driven compliance and risk management tools.
The bank said all AI deployments will operate within its enterprise infrastructure and include data governance, access controls, and regulatory oversight measures.
