LOWER POTTSGROVE TWP, PA — Motorists navigating Montgomery County next week should brace for disruptions as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) continues its ambitious $83.6 million overhaul of the U.S. 422 expressway. The project, aimed at reconstructing approximately 2.1 miles of the roadway and replacing bridges between the Sanatoga Interchange and Porter Road in Lower Pottsgrove Township, is set to enter a new phase of construction activities.

From Monday, May 6, through Friday, May 10, drivers will encounter a series of lane closures and traffic modifications designed to facilitate the installation of an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), along with significant roadway and shoulder reconstruction efforts. Notably, eastbound and westbound lanes of U.S. 422 between the Route 724 and Route 100 interchanges will see right lane closures from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM each day for ITS implementation.

Additional daytime lane closures will impact eastbound U.S. 422 traffic between Keim Street and Evergreen Road from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and westbound traffic between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard from 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM for roadway and shoulder reconstruction, respectively.

Sanatoga Road will also experience lane closures with flagging operations between Linfield Road and High Street from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM to accommodate bridge construction activities. Adding to the complexity, intermittent 15-minute traffic stoppages and pacing are scheduled in both directions on U.S. 422 between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Wednesday, May 8, through Friday, May 10. These measures are necessary for controlled rock blasting, part of the drainage construction process, ensuring the safety of both motorists and construction crews.

PennDOT advises travelers through these areas to allocate extra time for their journeys, as these construction activities are highly likely to lead to significant backups and delays. The timing of these operations remains dependent on favorable weather conditions.

The larger objectives of Section M1B of the project include not only the expressway’s reconstruction on both existing and modified alignments but also improvements to horizontal curve radii, shoulder widths, and vertical clearance. These enhancements aim to elevate travel efficiency and safety along this crucial corridor. The plan also details the replacement of a culvert at Sprogels Run and the existing bridge over Porter Road with a new two-span structure. Additionally, the bridge spanning Sanatoga Road and Sanatoga Creek is slated for reconstruction and widening, further contributing to the project’s comprehensive scope.
