MIDDLETOWN TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that construction will begin on Tuesday, May 28, on a $10.6 million project aimed at improving traffic congestion and safety on Langhorne-Yardley Road at the Bridgetown Pike and Woodbourne Road intersections in Middletown Township, Bucks County.
This project includes constructing a single-lane roundabout to replace the existing signalized T-intersection at Langhorne-Yardley Road and Bridgetown Pike. The roundabout is expected to decrease vehicular speeds while enhancing safety and traffic flow. Motorists will need to follow detour routes once construction begins.
At the Langhorne-Yardley Road and Woodbourne Road intersection, improvements involve realigning the northern leg of Woodbourne Road, adding auxiliary turn lanes on all four approaches, and widening the eastern leg of Woodbourne Road to include a left turn lane on Langhorne-Yardley Road approaching Erica Drive.
Additional enhancements along Langhorne-Yardley Road between Bridgetown Pike and Woodbourne Road include minor vertical realignment to improve sight distance and lane and shoulder widening.
Pedestrian and bicyclist mobility will also be improved with several new features:
- Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) will be installed at existing pedestrian crossings on Langhorne-Yardley Road just east of the Briggs Road intersection and on Woodbourne Road at the Core Creek Park and Maple Point Middle School crossings.
- Five-foot-wide paved shoulders and new paved paths along Bridgetown Pike and Woodbourne Road will connect these intersections to Core Creek Park driveways.
- Pedestrian accommodations will be added at the roundabout and signalized intersection.
- Sidewalks will be constructed along the southern side of Langhorne-Yardley Road between Woodbourne Road and Briggs Road.
Beginning Tuesday, May 28, through late August, periodic lane closures will occur on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM in both directions on Langhorne-Yardley Road between Bridgetown Pike and Woodbourne Road for utility and clearing work.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area as backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
