BALA CYNWYD, PA — Connect America has introduced a nurse-triage service integrated into its personal emergency response systems, targeting avoidable emergency department visits and medical transportation costs by connecting at-risk patients with registered nurses before health concerns escalate.
The service, CareCompass, allows users to reach a nurse through the same help button traditionally used to summon emergency assistance. Nurses can assess symptoms, recommend an appropriate care setting, support treatment at home when clinically appropriate or dispatch emergency medical services when necessary.
The expansion positions the company’s emergency-response technology as an earlier intervention tool for older adults, patients with elevated health risks and populations covered by Medicare and Medicaid.
Nearly half of interactions involving personal emergency response systems concern health issues that may not require an emergency medical response, according to Connect America.
“Historically, the default response to a health concern has often been EMS and ED visits, even when it may not be necessary,” Chief Executive Officer Janet Dillione stated. “CareCompass introduces a smarter first step: immediate clinical guidance that helps resolve issues in place whenever appropriate, improving outcomes while reducing unnecessary cost.”
The service is intended for both individual consumers and health care organizations, including insurers, medical providers and care-management programs.
Consumers and caregivers receive round-the-clock access to registered nurses for everyday health concerns and emergencies. For insurers and providers, the service is designed to reduce unnecessary hospital utilization, support patients at home and improve oversight of emerging health risks.
CareCompass also collects clinical information during patient interactions, giving care teams additional context beyond traditional emergency-response incident reports.
Organizations can use that information to identify patients at elevated risk, detect developing health patterns and coexisting medical conditions, address gaps in care and coordinate follow-up interventions.
The clinical data may also help care managers adjust treatment plans, reinforce patient education and intervene before symptoms worsen.
“When people act earlier, everything improves—outcomes, experience, and cost,” Dillione stated. “CareCompass gives people permission and confidence to reach out sooner, which ultimately leads to better care and fewer avoidable emergencies.”
