PHILADELPHIA, PA — Comcast is expanding Xfinity beyond broadband with a new home-protection platform that combines network-level cybersecurity, WiFi-based motion detection and family controls, while offering customers a $15-a-month upgrade with cameras, sensors and emergency-response features.
Xfinity Shield became available Aug. 18, according to the Philadelphia-based company. Its core WiFi Shield service is included at no additional charge for Xfinity Internet customers nationwide who have an Advanced Xfinity Gateway, while the paid Shield Select tier extends the platform into physical home monitoring.
The move positions Comcast to use broadband equipment already installed in customers’ homes as infrastructure for security services, rather than requiring a separate system for every protection function.
Comcast stated that the average Xfinity customer connects 36 devices to WiFi and that its network identifies, filters and blocks an average of 30 million threats a day.
WiFi Shield includes Xfinity CyberSecure, which operates at the network level to detect and block malware, phishing attempts and other online threats before they reach devices connected through an Xfinity Gateway.
The service also includes an opt-in feature called WiFi Motion that uses changes in radio-frequency signals between a Gateway and connected WiFi devices to detect movement inside a home. Customers can receive alerts through the Xfinity app without installing cameras or conventional motion detectors.
Comcast stated that WiFi Motion does not record video, capture images or identify individuals.
Family Settings adds controls allowing customers to create profiles, group devices by household member, set screen-time limits, pause WiFi access and establish schedules.
Customers can configure Shield through three modes — Home Watch, Away Watch and Dark Watch — that adjust features and notifications depending on whether users are home, away or asleep.
The $15-a-month Shield Select tier adds an indoor camera, door and window sensor, cloud video storage and round-the-clock urgent-response functionality that allows customers to request emergency assistance.
Its camera system uses AI-assisted motion detection to distinguish among people, pets, vehicles and package deliveries, according to Comcast.
“We believe the network should do more than connect devices,” Jon Gieselman, Comcast’s chief growth officer for Connectivity & Platforms, said. “It should help protect the people, their personal information, and everything within their homes.”
The product broadens the role of Comcast’s broadband network as the company seeks to integrate connectivity and home protection into a single customer relationship managed through the Xfinity app.
“We believe the future of protection should be integrated into the technology people already use every day, not added as another product they have to manage,” Comcast Global Chief Product Officer Fraser Stirling said.
WiFi Shield and Shield Select are the first products planned for the Xfinity Shield platform. Comcast stated that additional capabilities are scheduled for 2027.
