PHILADELPHIA, PA — Comcast is deploying technology that detects construction activity and other disturbances near its fiber-optic infrastructure, giving the cable and broadband provider an early-warning system intended to prevent network damage and reduce service disruptions.
The Philadelphia-based company said its fiber sensing technology analyzes vibrations traveling through fiber-optic cables to identify and locate activity around its network in real time.
The system can distinguish between routine activity, such as subway trains passing underground cables, and potential threats, including construction equipment operating near buried fiber lines.
When the technology detects activity that could damage infrastructure, it can alert Comcast personnel and identify the affected location, allowing crews to investigate before an incident interrupts service.
The capability addresses a recurring operational risk for telecommunications providers: physical damage to underground infrastructure that can disrupt connectivity and require emergency repairs.
“The more visibility we have across the fiber that connects our network, the better we can anticipate problems, respond faster and minimize the impact to customers,” said Elad Nafshi, Comcast’s chief network officer.
Comcast is also evaluating whether fiber sensing can be integrated with artificial intelligence and other systems to automate incident assessment.
One potential application involves dispatching drones to provide real-time images of damaged infrastructure or nearby hazards, including vandalism, wildfires and accidents.
Those capabilities remain under exploration rather than part of the company’s described fiber sensing deployment.
Comcast is considering extending the technology to interconnected and third-party fiber networks that support its services, potentially expanding monitoring beyond infrastructure it directly operates.
The initiative builds on the company’s broader investment in network automation, telemetry and artificial intelligence.
Comcast has integrated monitoring and software capabilities throughout its infrastructure, including core network systems, neighborhood nodes, amplifiers and customer gateways, to improve visibility into network performance and equipment conditions.
The company also cited results from Opensignal’s May 2026 U.S. Fixed Broadband Experience Report, which ranked Xfinity first among the five largest U.S. internet providers for consistent quality, download speed and video experience.
Xfinity also received its second consecutive Most Reliable WiFi designation in comparisons conducted within its service footprint.
The fiber sensing deployment extends Comcast’s network monitoring capabilities from identifying equipment and service problems to detecting physical activity that could threaten its infrastructure before damage occurs.
