City Avenue Bridge Repair to Cut U.S. 1 to One Lane Each Way for 20 Months

Traffic, lane closed

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that U.S. 1 (City Avenue) will be reduced to a single lane in each direction for roughly 20 months as part of a $22.4 million bridge rehabilitation project spanning Lower Merion Township and Philadelphia.

Starting Wednesday, October 1, through Tuesday, June 1, 2027, the restriction will remain in place 24/7 between Bryn Mawr Avenue and 47th Street to allow for steel repair, utility construction, and related work. Business access will be maintained, but PennDOT warns motorists to expect significant congestion and delays.

The 114-year-old concrete arch bridge, widened in 1934, will undergo extensive rehabilitation, including sidewalk and retaining wall repairs, stormwater upgrades, resurfacing, and utility replacement. Pedestrian improvements will add ADA-compliant curb ramps and a stair system connecting City Avenue to SEPTA’s Bala Station and the Parkside Cynwyd Trail.
