Chattanooga’s Natural Beauty Preserved for Future Generations

North American Land Trust

CHADDS FORD, PA — In a remarkable effort to preserve Chattanooga’s natural landscape, the North American Land Trust (NALT) and a coalition of conservation and historic groups have secured a permanent conservation easement for 300 acres at Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center. This area, located near Lookout Mountain, will now be protected from development, ensuring its beauty can be enjoyed by future generations.

The easement, recently transferred to the State of Tennessee, results from a collaborative effort involving NALT, the Tennessee Historical Commission, and the American Battlefield Trust. “This conservation project truly was a team effort,” said NALT President Steven Carter. The commitment to preserving this land exemplifies the dedication to maintaining Chattanooga’s scenic and historical integrity.

Patrick McIntyre, Tennessee State Historic Preservation Officer, praised NALT’s involvement, saying, “We are very grateful to NALT for their key role in helping facilitate the permanent protection of this incredibly significant property along the edge of Lookout Mountain.”

Reflection Riding is steeped in rich history, having been part of the Civil War Battle of Lookout Mountain. Mark McKnight, President and CEO of Reflection Riding, highlighted the site’s legacy, noting the easement’s role in protecting its historical and cultural significance. “Our campus will continue to serve this community as a nature center and protected wild space,” McKnight stated, emphasizing ongoing plans to enhance trails and visitor facilities.

David Duncan, President of the American Battlefield Trust, lauded the swift protection efforts: “Working with our partners at NALT has enabled us to move swiftly to protect important land on multiple battlefields, from multiple conflicts.”
