HILLTOWN TWP, PA — In Hilltown Township, Bucks County, a significant infrastructure project is poised to commence on Monday, April 15, aiming to replace the aged Callowhill Road bridge over a branch of Pleasant Spring Creek. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has outlined plans for a comprehensive overhaul that includes replacing the current two-span masonry arch bridge, a structure that has stood for 117 years, with a modern single-span prestressed concrete spread box beam bridge.

This ambitious $1,763,335 project, largely funded by federal dollars with state contributions, seeks not only to replace the bridge but also to widen the roadway from its current 18 feet to 23 feet. This expansion will accommodate increased traffic flow and improve safety for the nearly 5,773 vehicles that traverse the bridge daily. Additional enhancements include pavement reconstruction, the installation of new guiderails, and the updating of signage and pavement markings to guide motorists safely across the new structure.

The need for this replacement became urgent after the bridge sustained significant damage from the remnants of Hurricane Ida in September 2021, leading to its closure. Before its closure, the bridge was subject to a 34-ton weight limit, underscoring concerns about its ability to support modern traffic demands.

During the construction phase, which is expected to last until fall 2024, motorists who typically use Callowhill Road will need to follow a detour route encompassing Route 113 (Main Street), Route 151 (Walnut Street), and South Perkasie Road. PennDOT assures that local access will be maintained up to the construction zone, but advises travelers to anticipate delays and allocate extra travel time when navigating the area.

Lobar Site Development Corporation, based in Dillsburg, York County, has been contracted to carry out the construction work. Motorists and local residents are reminded that all scheduled construction activities are contingent upon suitable weather conditions, and updates regarding the project’s progress will be provided as necessary.
