Bridge Inspections to Temporarily Slow Traffic on I-76 and I-95 in Philadelphia

Traffic Alert

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia motorists, take note: Your commute may hit a snag over the next few days. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has scheduled important bridge inspections on Interstates I-76 and I-95, crucial arteries in the city’s transport network. These examinations are part of an ongoing effort to ensure the safety and integrity of the structures that countless drivers rely on each day.

The inspections will lead to brief but significant travel restrictions. On Wednesday, April 3, from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM, drivers on eastbound I-76 will find the right lane closed between the Girard Avenue and Spring Garden Interchanges. Later that morning, from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM, the westbound lanes of I-76 will see a similar closure between the Girard Avenue and Montgomery Drive Interchanges.

The following week, on Friday, April 12, I-95 won’t be spared. From 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM, both directions between the Betsy Ross Bridge and the Bridge Street Interchanges will experience left lane closures. These necessary precautions, while brief, are expected to cause slowdowns, and PennDOT advises motorists to allow extra time when traveling through these areas.

The closures are important for regular infrastructure maintenance — in this case, the biennial inspections required to assess the condition of Pennsylvania’s bridges. Such checks are vital for identifying any issues early and ensuring that these critical links remain safe for public use.

While the timing of these inspections is designed to minimize impact on traffic flow, delays are inevitable. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, seeking alternate routes or adjusting departure times if possible. As always, these plans are weather-dependent, and schedules may adjust according to conditions.

For Philadelphia’s drivers, the message is clear: Expect possible slowdowns and prepare accordingly. The short-term inconvenience is a small price for the long-term safety and reliability of the city’s bridges.
