MONTGOMERY TWP, PA — Police and state wildlife officials are monitoring reports of a black bear spotted Friday evening near a busy commercial corridor in Montgomery Township.
The Montgomery Township Police Department responded June 26 to a reported black bear sighting in the 300 block of North Wales Road. According to police, the animal was last seen running into a wooded area between North Wales Road and 1200 Welsh Road, near the Montgomery Commons Shopping Center.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission was notified of the sighting and indicated it would monitor the area and investigate any additional reports of black bears in the vicinity.
Authorities urged residents to avoid approaching the animal if it is seen.
Police advised residents to remain calm, avoid running, and slowly back away if they encounter a bear. Officials also cautioned against feeding or approaching the animal and recommended making noise if the bear comes too close.
Anyone who spots a black bear in Montgomery Township is asked to contact the Montgomery Township Police Department or report the sighting directly to the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Southeast Regional Office at 610-926-3136.
