Apache Elevates Fluss, Pony Mail to Top-Level Projects

The Apache Software Foundation

WILMINGTON, DE — The Apache Software Foundation has elevated Apache Fluss and Apache Pony Mail to Top-Level Project status, giving the two open-source projects independent standing within the foundation as they target real-time data infrastructure and large-scale communications archives.

Fluss is a lakehouse-native streaming storage system designed for real-time analytics and artificial intelligence workloads. It combines streaming data, continuously updated tables and historical lakehouse data through a common table abstraction.

The system integrates with compute engines including Apache Flink and Apache Spark and supports open lakehouse formats including Apache Paimon, Apache Iceberg, Apache Hudi and Lance.

Fluss has been deployed in Alibaba’s core e-commerce production workloads, according to Feng Wang, head of Open Data Platform at Alibaba Cloud. Alibaba subsequently open-sourced the technology and donated it to the Apache Software Foundation.

Wang stated that Fluss’ architecture is intended to make lakehouse data available in real time while reducing “data duplication and pipeline complexity.”

Apache Pony Mail addresses a different infrastructure problem, providing a web-based interface for browsing and searching large mailing-list archives.

The software is designed to handle millions of archived messages and hundreds of requests per second. Users can browse and search mailing lists and create replies to existing threads.

Pony Mail supports public, private and mixed-mode deployments, allowing organizations to manage different categories of archived communications through a single system.

Top-Level Project status places Fluss and Pony Mail among independently governed Apache projects following development within the foundation’s project ecosystem.
