PENNSYLVANIA — In a festive announcement at HersheyPark on Wednesday, Governor Josh Shapiro, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding, and Pennsylvania State Veterinarian Dr. Alex Hamberg joined Santa Claus and his reindeer team to declare them fit for their special Christmas Eve duties.

The iconic reindeer — Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and of course, Rudolph — have been given a clean bill of health. This clearance allows them to fly across all 67 Pennsylvania counties for the joyful task of “toy delivery by air” to the “good boys and girls of Pennsylvania”.

Dr. Robert F. Gerlach, Alaska’s state veterinarian, initially issued their Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. After a thorough review, Pennsylvania State Veterinarian Dr. Alex Hamberg confirmed their healthy status. These certificates are crucial in ensuring that contagious diseases do not cross state lines.

Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding praised the care received by Santa’s reindeer. He said, “Despite Rudolph’s shiny red nose and the team’s mysterious ability to fly, our veterinary experts have declared Santa’s reindeer healthy for their important holiday task.” He further added that parents across Pennsylvania can sleep peacefully on Christmas Eve, knowing that the herd is in good health.

Governor Shapiro echoed the sentiment, relishing in the magic of the holiday season. He said, “This magical time of year brings lightness and cheer to every Pennsylvanian – no matter what holidays you celebrate. Merry Christmas!”

This announcement serves as a delightful reminder of the joy and unity that the holiday season brings. It’s a time for family, generosity, and a bit of light. And thanks to the dedicated service of our state vets, Santa will safely make his journey to every community in Pennsylvania this Christmas Eve.
