SCRANTON, PA — John Bartel, a 64-year-old resident of Pottsville in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, was sentenced on December 7, 2023, by U.S. District Court Judge Malachy E. Mannion. Bartel received a prison term of 16 months on the charge of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl.

United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam stated that Bartel had previously pleaded guilty, admitting to possessing these substances for further distribution. The case against Bartel arose from an incident on August 3, 2022, when the Pennsylvania State Police stopped a vehicle Bartel was driving in Pottsville. The police seized approximately 55 grams of methamphetamine, 1,371 packets of fentanyl, and $1,974 in U.S. currency. Bartel was the only individual in the vehicle at the time of the stop.

The investigation leading to Bartel’s charge was conducted jointly by the Pennsylvania State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Safe Streets Task Force. Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara took on the task of prosecuting the case.
