Pittsburgh Man Sentenced for Possession of Firearm with Altered Serial Number

Court News

PITTSBURGH, PA — Raymond Young, a 22-year-old Pittsburgh resident, was sentenced in federal court to time already served, approximately 16 months, followed by three years of supervised release. The sentencing, announced by United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan on Tuesday, comes after Young’s conviction for possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

United States Senior District Judge David S. Cercone handed down the sentence, concluding a case that highlights ongoing efforts to combat violent crime. The charge stemmed from an incident on January 12, 2022, when Allegheny County Police detectives, conducting a violent crime suppression detail in the Homestead area, encountered Young.

Detectives observed Young preparing to smoke marijuana. Upon their approach, Young reached for his waistband, revealing a stolen and loaded Glock 23 semi-automatic handgun. Notably, the firearm had its serial numbers on both the slide and frame deliberately obscured, a tactic often employed to hinder the tracing of weapons used in criminal activities. In addition to the firearm, authorities recovered $544 in cash, approximately 100 grams of marijuana, and a digital scale from Young at the time of his arrest.

Assistant United States Attorney Brendan T. Conway led the prosecution, emphasizing the importance of holding individuals accountable for actions that contribute to the proliferation of untraceable firearms on the streets.
