PENNSYLVANIA — Pennsylvania consumers identified Woodman’s Markets, WinCo Foods and Ruler Foods as the discount retail chains they most want operating in the state, reflecting demand for lower grocery prices as household budgets remain under pressure.
The rankings come from a survey of 3,003 respondents conducted by Lenspricer.com, a contact lens price-comparison website that also examined how consumers approach other routine purchases.
Woodman’s Markets ranked first among Pennsylvania respondents. The grocery chain offers large stores with extensive selections of brands, package sizes and specialty products while maintaining competitive prices.
WinCo Foods placed second. Its warehouse-style grocery stores emphasize bulk purchasing and basic store formats aimed at lowering costs for families and other shoppers.
Ruler Foods ranked third, reflecting interest in stores focused on low-cost groceries and household essentials.
The broader survey found that consumers do not consistently apply the same price-shopping habits to prescription glasses and contact lenses.
Only 31% of respondents reported comparing prices across multiple eyewear retailers. Another 28% returned to their usual seller, while 22% purchased products wherever their eye doctor recommended.
Overall, 36% believed they might be overpaying for eyewear, and another 25% were unsure whether they were getting a competitive price.
About 45% did not realize that the same brand of contact lenses can sell for substantially different prices across retailers, according to the survey.
Although 74% reported comparing eyewear prices at least occasionally, only 31% indicated they do so every time.
Convenience or loyalty prevented 28% of respondents from shopping around, while 22% assumed prices were generally the same between sellers.
Despite those habits, 86% indicated they would consider switching retailers if an identical product were available for less.
“What’s striking is how that same price-conscious instinct can quietly switch off when a purchase feels more routine or specialised,” stated Rasmus Adeltoft of Lenspricer.com.
