PITTSBURGH, PA — A resident of McKees Rocks, PA, has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of mail theft, according to an announcement made Wednesday by United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan. The defendant, India Schatzman, 49, was an employee of the United States Postal Service at the time of the alleged crime.

Schatzman pleaded guilty to a single count before United States District Judge William S. Stickman, IV. The court heard that on December 30, 2022, Schatzman was caught on surveillance by inspectors from the Postal Inspection Service. She was allegedly seen stealing a Visa gift card from a greeting card that was intended for a recipient in Washington State.

Judge Stickman has scheduled the sentencing hearing for April 19, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. If found guilty, Schatzman could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a fine not exceeding $250,000, or both. The actual sentence will be determined based on the seriousness of the offense and any previous criminal history of the defendant, as per the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

Pending the sentencing, the court has decided to continue the defendant’s bond.

The case against Schatzman is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Carolyn J. Bloch. The investigation leading up to the prosecution was conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service.
