HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania officials on Wednesday urged small business owners to review insurance coverage and fire prevention measures as rising operational risks and disaster-related losses continue to threaten business continuity across the state.

The Pennsylvania Insurance Department and the Office of the State Fire Commissioner visited a local business during Small Business Month to promote insurance planning, fire prevention, and recovery preparedness for small employers. Officials highlighted how inadequate coverage can leave businesses financially vulnerable following fires, floods, or other disruptions.

Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys stated that comprehensive coverage can help businesses survive unexpected losses that might otherwise force permanent closures.

State officials specifically encouraged businesses to consider Business Owner’s Policies, or BOPs, which bundle several forms of commercial protection into a single policy. Standard policies typically include commercial property insurance, general liability coverage, and business interruption insurance tied to events such as fires or floods.

Nicole Raptapolus, owner of Color Bar Beauty Salon, described insurance coverage as critical to her company’s recovery following a serious fire.

Officials also promoted preventative fire safety measures, including maintaining extinguishers and alarm systems, keeping exits clear, safely storing flammable materials, and training employees on evacuation procedures.

Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner Thomas Cook stated that businesses should work with local fire departments and insurance professionals before emergencies occur to reduce operational and financial risks tied to fires.

The agencies also advised businesses dealing with property damage to immediately contact insurers, document losses with photographs or videos before cleanup begins, retain records of expenses and damaged inventory, and review policy terms carefully if claims are denied.
