PITTSBURGH, PA — Shawn Layne, a 39-year-old resident of McKees Rocks, has been sentenced to over three years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition. The sentence was announced by United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan on Thursday, April 11, 2024, following Layne’s conviction as a felon in possession of these items.

United States District Judge Christy Criswell Wiegand delivered the 37-month imprisonment sentence to Layne. The conviction stems from an incident on June 14, 2023, when authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Pennsylvania State Police, executed a search warrant at Layne’s home. During the search, a loaded handgun was discovered in the bedroom, marking a clear violation of federal law given Layne’s criminal history.

Layne had previously been convicted of multiple felony drug offenses in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. Under federal law, such a conviction bars an individual from legally possessing firearms or ammunition. The seizure of the handgun from Layne’s residence thus constituted a direct breach of this legal stipulation.

The case against Layne was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brendan J. McKenna. In announcing the sentence, United States Attorney Olshan praised the investigative efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Pennsylvania State Police, which led to Layne’s successful prosecution.
