ANNVILLE, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is urging veterans living with limb loss or limb difference to apply for a monthly pension. This encouragement coincides with the Amputee Coalition’s recognition of April as National Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month.

The state’s Amputee and Paralyzed Veterans Pension program offers a lifeline in the form of a $150 monthly payment to qualifying veterans. With over 2,300 veterans currently benefiting from the program across Pennsylvania, the initiative emphasizes the state’s commitment to honoring the service and sacrifices of its military personnel.

Maj. Gen. Mark Schindler, Pennsylvania’s adjutant general and the head of DMVA, emphasized the state’s obligation to its veterans. “Pennsylvania’s veterans bravely served this state and our nation, often at great peril,” he said. “It is our duty to care for those who served.”

Veterans interested in applying must meet several criteria. They need to have been Pennsylvania residents upon entering the military, received an Honorable or Under Honorable Conditions discharge, and have a service-connected disability rated at 40% or higher in each of two or more limbs, whether arms/hands or legs/feet, as determined by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

For those looking to apply, the DMVA advises contacting the County Directors of Veterans Affairs in their county of residence. Further details about the program and application process are available through the DMVA.

This initiative not only provides financial support but also brings attention to the challenges faced by veterans with limb loss or limb differences. The importance of such programs cannot be overstated; they offer a tangible acknowledgment of the physical sacrifices veterans have made and continue to navigate daily. Moreover, these benefits play a crucial role in ensuring that veterans receive the recognition and support they deserve, aiding in their transition to civilian life and enhancing their quality of life.

As we observe National Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, the spotlight on Pennsylvania’s Amputee and Paralyzed Veterans Pension program serves as a reminder of the ongoing needs of veterans who have served their country. It underscores the broader societal responsibility to ensure that those who have given so much in service to their nation receive the support and respect they merit.
