HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania officials approved more than $1.4 million in grants to expand natural gas infrastructure and support economic development projects in two counties, state officials announced.

What This Means for You

  • New natural gas access could reach homes, schools, and businesses
  • Infrastructure upgrades may support job growth in local communities
  • New funding is available for communities preparing development sites

The Department of Community and Economic Development said the Commonwealth Financing Authority approved $1,448,002 through the Pipeline Investment Program, which helps extend natural gas service to underserved areas.

The Pipeline Investment Program provides funding to build the final segments of natural gas lines to industrial sites, business parks, and nearby communities, with the goal of supporting economic growth and expanding energy access.

Where the Funding Is Going

In Bradford County, $877,918 was awarded to Leatherstocking Gas Company to construct a pipeline in Wyalusing Borough. The project is expected to provide natural gas service to 110 homes and 60 commercial properties, including a manufacturing facility.

In Somerset County, $570,084 was awarded to the Rockwood Area School District to extend natural gas service to school facilities in Rockwood Borough. Officials said the project will replace an existing heating system and could expand access to nearby homes and businesses.

Why Officials Say It Matters

State officials said expanding natural gas infrastructure can help lower energy costs, improve environmental conditions tied to older heating systems, and make communities more attractive to businesses.

“Strategic investments in infrastructure and site development help communities compete for new jobs and business growth,” said DCED Secretary Rick Siger.

Additional Development Funding Available

Officials also announced that applications are now open for the Business in Our Sites program, which provides grants and loans to prepare land for commercial and industrial development.

The program supports “shovel-ready” sites, meaning properties that have completed necessary planning and approvals so construction can begin quickly.

Applications for that program will be accepted through June 30, 2026, using the state’s online funding system.

Next Steps

Projects funded through the Pipeline Investment Program are expected to move forward as construction plans are finalized, while communities can apply for additional development funding through the open application period.
