HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania drivers can now purchase a new specialty license plate that funds historical education programs while showcasing two of the state’s most recognizable symbols.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission announced the launch of the “Preserve Our Heritage” special fund plate, which features the Pennsylvania Bank Barn and the Liberty Bell.
What the Plate Represents
The Pennsylvania Bank Barn is a traditional agricultural structure built into hillsides, designed to allow ground-level access to multiple floors. First developed in the early 1700s, it became a defining feature of Pennsylvania’s rural landscape.
Officials said the design highlights the state’s agricultural and historical heritage.
“For centuries, the iconic stone foundations and cantilevered forebays of the Pennsylvania Bank Barn have stood as steadfast symbols of our state’s deep agricultural roots,” said PHMC Executive Director Andrea Lowery.
How the Program Works
Special fund plates are optional license plates that allow drivers to support specific state programs through an added fee.
The new plate costs $64, with $23 directed to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission to support education initiatives and museum exhibits.
“PennDOT is proud to commit funds from the sale of each Preserve Our Heritage special fund plate to support the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission’s education and exhibit programs,” said PennDOT Deputy Secretary Kara Templeton.
Eligibility and How to Apply
The plate is available for passenger vehicles and trucks with a registered gross weight of 14,000 pounds or less.
Drivers can apply by completing Form MV-911, the state’s application for special fund registration plates.
