PENNSYLVANIA — Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is starting 2024 on a high note by hosting nearly 60 guided hikes across 43 state parks and two forest districts. These hikes are part of the nationwide “First Day Hike” initiative designed to promote a healthy start to the new year and connect families with nature.

“First Day Hikes are always a great way to start the new year in natural spaces, and this year we are focusing on building connections to public lands,” said DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. She added that this was an excellent opportunity for Pennsylvanians and visitors alike to learn about the variety of programs offered at state parks, discover new recreational hobbies, or delve into the history of Pennsylvania through its public lands.

State park and forest staff, along with volunteers, will lead the hikes, which typically cover one to two miles. Some hikes may be longer depending on the park and its terrain. The following Pennsylvania state parks and forest facilities will be participating during daylight hours on January 1, 2024: Bald Eagle State Park, Beltzville State Park, Big Elk Creek State Park, Black Moshannon State Park, Buchanan State Forest, and many more.

First Day Hikes, organized by the National Association of State Park Directors, aims to promote healthy lifestyles throughout the year and encourage year-round recreation at state parks. Since 2012, all 50 states have sponsored First Day Hikes, attracting over 730 million people annually to America’s State Parks and significantly contributing to the U.S economy.

In addition to the guided hikes, many Pennsylvania state parks also offer self-guided hikes, story walks, and adventure labs available year-round. “Our state parks and forests are open for healthy outdoor adventures in all four seasons, and we hope that people use First Day Hikes to explore what our public lands have to offer,” Dunn said.

Hikers are encouraged to share their experiences on social media using #FirstDayHikes. So, put on your hiking boots, grab your family and friends, and start 2024 with a memorable hike in one of Pennsylvania’s stunning state parks!
