HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) recently announced a significant investment in the state’s career and technical education programs. More than $4 million in competitive grants have been awarded to 55 career and technical centers (CTCs) and school districts across the state. The funds are designated for the purchase of new equipment, aimed at equipping students with the skills they need for high-demand occupations.

Secretary Khalid N. Mumin emphasized the impact of these grants on the future workforce of the Commonwealth. “Career and technical education programs provide students with the skills and hands-on experience they need to build careers in high-demand, high-paying fields,” he said.

The PDE’s Competitive Equipment Grants will enhance access to top-tier equipment and experiences for students. This initiative aligns with the Shapiro Administration’s commitment to ensuring all students have access to a world-class education that prepares them for life beyond the classroom.

The administration recognizes that postsecondary paths vary for each high school student. Whether students plan to enter the workforce directly, join the military, or continue their education, career and technical education offers an opportunity to develop critical skills. These programs allow students to apply academic knowledge to real-world problems via a combination of classes and hands-on learning experiences.

Governor Josh Shapiro’s 2024-2025 budget proposal reflects a continued commitment to career and technical education. It includes more than $121 million for these programs and $15 million for equipment grants. The budget also addresses the current teacher shortage in Pennsylvania, calling for significant investments in teacher recruitment and professional development. It proposes increased funding for student teacher stipends, underscoring the importance of compensating those entering the profession for their hard work.
