LANCASTER, PA — On Thursday, Governor Josh Shapiro brought the Great American Getaway RV tour to Bedford and Lancaster, focusing on small businesses, historic stops, and celebrating America’s favorite pastime.
Earlier this week, Governor Shapiro launched Pennsylvania’s new state tourism brand: The Great American Getaway. This initiative positions Pennsylvania as a prime weekend destination, boasting thousands of attractions. Highlighted upcoming events in 2026 include America’s 250th anniversary celebration, the FIFA World Cup, and the MLB All-Star Game.
In Bedford and Lancaster, Governor Shapiro visited local small businesses, announced $7 million to support Pennsylvania’s main streets and communities, and threw the ceremonial first pitch at the Lancaster Stormers game. His goal is to attract more visitors to the state.
During his visit to historic downtown Lancaster City, Governor Shapiro and his family explored local businesses. At Southern Market Food Hall, originally built in 1888 as a farmers’ market, they met with small business owners. The market now offers a variety of international foods.
Next, they visited Decades, a local restaurant, bar, retro arcade, and bowling alley located in the historic Stahr Armory building. This venue exemplifies the diverse attractions suitable for families.
The Shapiro family then attended a Lancaster Stormers game at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Governor Shapiro threw the first pitch, emphasizing Pennsylvania’s appeal for sports fans. Nearly 72 million people live within a four-hour drive of the state, making it an accessible destination for major events.
Governor Shapiro’s new tourism brand is part of his broader economic development strategy. Tourism generates $76 billion annually and supports over 486,000 jobs in Pennsylvania. The Great American Getaway builds on Shapiro’s proposed $18 million tourism investment for the 2024-25 budget, aimed at boosting the economy, attracting visitors, and supporting well-paying jobs.
According to a recent report from the Pennsylvania Tourism Office, the industry generated $76.7 billion in economic impact, supported 486,871 jobs, contributed $4.7 billion in state and local taxes, and welcomed 192.4 million visitors in 2022.
In Lancaster County alone, tourism generated $3.26 billion, supported 24,481 jobs, contributed $235 million in state and local taxes, and welcomed 9.77 million visitors in 2022.
Tourism impacts various sectors, from hospitality and entertainment to state parks and outdoor recreation. It fuels Pennsylvania’s economy and offers every traveler a chance to pursue their dreams. Governor Shapiro’s efforts highlight the importance of tourism in supporting local communities and enhancing the state’s appeal as a premier travel destination.
