HOWARD, PA — The Shapiro Administration formally welcomed Pennsylvania’s summer outdoor recreation season during an event held at Bald Eagle State Park on Wednesday. The event celebrated the Commonwealth’s significant infrastructure investments, the rising popularity of state parks, and the economic contributions of outdoor recreation.
Key Highlights:
- Growing Demand for Outdoor Adventures: The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) reported a 30% rise in campsite reservations this spring compared to the same period in 2024, reflecting an increased interest in exploring Pennsylvania’s public lands.
- Economic Contributions: Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreation industry generated $19 billion in 2023, a 10% increase from the previous year, and supports 168,000 jobs statewide.
- Infrastructure Enhancements: Since January 2023, $120 million has been allocated to improving state parks, including the newly opened White Pine Camping Loop at Bald Eagle State Park.
The White Pine Camping Loop, unveiled during Wednesday’s kickoff, is a $1.9 million project adding 22 full-service, pet-friendly RV campsites to the park’s existing array of accommodations. Bald Eagle State Park, encompassing 5,900 acres and featuring Foster Joseph Sayers Lake, serves as a testament to preserving Pennsylvania’s natural beauty while honoring its history.
“Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and we want people to know: Pennsylvania’s public lands are open, awesome, and waiting to welcome you,” remarked DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “From scenic hikes and peaceful lakes to campfires under the stars, there’s something for everyone in our state parks and forests.”
Speakers at the event included Bald Eagle State Park Manager Bill Kocher, Centre County Commissioner Mark Higgins, and Nathan Reigner, Pennsylvania’s Director of Outdoor Recreation. Reigner highlighted the sector’s importance, stating, “These spaces are vital not only for our wellbeing but also for supporting jobs and businesses that power Pennsylvania’s growing outdoor economy.”
Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration has championed continued investments in public lands, with plans to expand Lehigh Gorge State Park and open Pennsylvania’s 125th state park at Laurel Caverns. This commitment further cements the state’s dedication to accessibility, sustainability, and economic opportunity through outdoor recreation.
Bald Eagle State Park’s enhancements and the broader state initiatives signal an exciting season ahead, as residents and visitors are invited to explore the natural wonders across Pennsylvania’s 124 state parks and 2.2 million acres of forestland.
