PENNSYLVANIA — On Tuesday, Department of Corrections Acting Secretary Laurel Harry signed a Notice of Execution setting September 1, 2023, for the execution of Harve Lamar Johnson, who was sentenced to death in York County.

In November 2009, Harve Lamar Johnson was sentenced to death by the State of Pennsylvania for the fatal beating of two-year-old Darisabel Baez. Court documents reveal that on April 6, 2008, Johnson subjected Darisabel, his girlfriend’s daughter, to severe violence resulting in over 200 injuries. Medical professionals estimate that the injuries were inflicted over approximately 45 minutes. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court upheld Johnson’s conviction and sentence in April 2012.

The law provides that when the governor does not sign a warrant of execution within the specified time period, the secretary of corrections has 30 days within which to issue a notice of execution.
