PITTSBURGH, PA — A 23-year-old man from Delaware County, Pennsylvania, was convicted of possessing significant quantities of trans-3-methylfentanyl, cis-3-methylfentanyl, and cocaine with the intent to distribute. The conviction of Jamir Hughes was announced by United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.
Hughes pleaded guilty before United States District Judge Robert J. Colville, who has scheduled the sentencing for May 8, 2024.
In connection with the plea, the Court was informed that on May 27, 2020, Hughes was found in possession of 17 grams of a mixture of trans-3-methylfentanyl and cis-3-methylfentanyl, along with 115 grams of cocaine. These substances were discovered in a car traveling on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Somerset County.
Hughes was en route from the Philadelphia area to Butler in Butler County, intending to distribute the controlled substances upon arrival. However, his journey was cut short when the Pennsylvania State Police intercepted the vehicle in Somerset County and seized the drugs.
This case highlights the severity of penalties for drug trafficking offenses. The law stipulates a sentence of at least five years and up to 40 years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000,000, or both. The actual sentence will be determined based on the gravity of the offense and any prior criminal history of the defendant.
Assistant United States Attorney Craig W. Haller is prosecuting this case on behalf of the United States. The investigation leading to the conviction was conducted by the Pennsylvania State Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Butler County District Attorney’s Drug Task Force.
