WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Mint will begin selling limited-edition Morgan and Peace silver dollars on August 25, restricting initial purchases to 10 of each coin per household as it introduces one-year designs commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Orders open at noon Eastern time. The household purchase limits will remain in effect for the first 26 hours after sales begin.
Both enhanced uncirculated coins feature the dual dates “1776 ~ 2026” and a Liberty Bell privy mark bearing the numeral “250.”
The commemorative designs will be issued only for 2026, marking the semiquincentennial of the United States’ founding.
The Morgan dollar, struck in 99.9% fine silver, features a design by former Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan.
Originally minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, the Morgan dollar is associated with the country’s westward expansion and industrial development.
Its obverse depicts Liberty in profile, surrounded by 13 stars, the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and the commemorative dates.
The reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings holding arrows and an olive branch, alongside the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
The Peace dollar replaced the Morgan design in December 1921 and remained in production through 1935.
Designed by Italian American sculptor Anthony de Francisco, the coin commemorated the end of World War I and the nation’s emergence as an international power.
Its obverse portrays Liberty wearing a radiant crown and includes the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRVST” and “1776 ~ 2026.”
The reverse depicts an eagle holding an olive branch above the word “PEACE,” accompanied by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
