WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Mint began shipping its 2026 U.S. Constitution Quarter to Federal Reserve Banks on Monday, putting the Semiquincentennial coin featuring Philadelphia’s Independence Hall into the distribution system for commercial banks and financial institutions.
The quarter is part of a congressionally authorized coin program commemorating 250 years of American independence. The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 authorized designs reflecting the nation’s founding principles and history.
The obverse features James Madison, the fourth U.S. president, whose role in drafting and promoting the Constitution earned him the designation “Father of the Constitution.”
The inscriptions on that side are “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “1776 ~ 2026.”
The reverse depicts Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where both the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were debated and signed and where the Liberty Bell was housed.
The design pairs Independence Hall with the phrase “WE THE PEOPLE,” invoking the Constitution’s principle that governmental authority derives from the governed.
Additional reverse inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “U.S. CONSTITUTION” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”
The Mint’s shipment to Federal Reserve Banks begins the process through which the new quarters can reach commercial banks and other financial institutions.
