WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Education has announced an allocation of $179 million in grants aimed at fostering academic acceleration and literacy development. This funding initiative aligns with the Biden-Harris Administration’s overarching goal to elevate student performance across all states.
A significant portion of this investment, $149 million, is earmarked for the Comprehensive Literacy State Development (CLSD) program, marking the largest number of awards in the program’s history. This initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to advancing literacy, a critical cornerstone for academic success and future opportunities. The grants will empower 23 state educational agencies to implement evidence-based literacy interventions, ensuring students meet essential literacy milestones. By partnering with state Institutions of Higher Education, these grants aim to provide districts and schools with robust support for high-quality literacy instruction.
The announcement was highlighted during the Department’s Back to School Bus Tour, featuring U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona and White House Domestic Policy Advisor Neera Tanden. The tour, with its theme “Fighting for Public Education,” seeks to showcase the pivotal role of public education in nurturing the nation’s future leaders. By visiting key states such as Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, the tour celebrates the transformative impact of strategic educational investments.
In addition to the CLSD grants, nearly $30 million is designated for Competitive Grants for State Assessments (CGSA), enhancing the capacity of state assessments to support academic growth. These efforts reflect a comprehensive strategy to advance literacy and academic achievement, solidifying the administration’s dedication to equipping every student with the tools necessary for success.
