WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump on Friday issued a proclamation designating July 4, 2026, as the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, calling on Americans to commemorate the nation’s founding and outlining an expansive vision for the country’s future.
The proclamation marks the formal federal recognition of the United States semiquincentennial, a milestone that has prompted celebrations and commemorative events nationwide, particularly in Philadelphia, where the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration in 1776.
In the proclamation, Trump described the Declaration of Independence as a “legendary charter of freedom” and portrayed the nation’s history as one of expanding liberty, economic growth and technological achievement.
The president also used the occasion to advance several priorities of his administration, including strengthening domestic energy production, expanding artificial intelligence and quantum technology development, restoring law and order, and pursuing renewed space exploration efforts.
“We will seize the new frontiers of artificial intelligence and quantum discovery, unleash the boundless energy beneath our soil, and expand the wealth and abundance of the American People,” Trump wrote.
The proclamation repeatedly emphasized themes of national sovereignty, faith, military strength and economic prosperity, describing the current period as a “new era of American greatness.”
Trump also called for Americans to honor the sacrifices of the nation’s founders and generations of service members and citizens who, he said, preserved the country’s democratic institutions and freedoms.
“Today, as one American People, we celebrate and carry forward the spirit our Founders kindled in Philadelphia and enshrined in the Declaration of Independence,” the president wrote.
The declaration comes as communities across the country stage events marking the nation’s 250th birthday, including historical reenactments, educational programs and civic celebrations tied to the America250 initiative.
By proclamation, Trump urged Americans to observe July 4 “with all due ceremony to honor the glorious heritage, history, and accomplishments of our beloved Republic.”
