WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States Department of Transportation is making $3 billion in federal funding available for bridge repair and replacement projects as the Trump administration pushes states to accelerate upgrades to aging transportation infrastructure.
Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the funding through the Federal Highway Administration’s Bridge Investment Program, which targets bridges in poor condition and supports projects intended to improve freight movement, traffic flow and roadway safety.
Federal officials indicated the administration is seeking to reduce permitting and administrative delays tied to infrastructure development while giving states greater flexibility in how projects are advanced.
“For too long, essential infrastructure has been held hostage by red tape delaying improvements that move traffic,” Duffy stated while outlining the administration’s approach to bridge investment and project delivery.
Sean McMaster noted that the program is intended to help states and local governments accelerate bridge construction and rehabilitation efforts nationwide.
The funding opportunity includes two grant categories. Planning grants will support feasibility studies, planning work and revenue forecasting tied to future bridge projects, while Bridge Project grants will support replacement, rehabilitation, preservation and protection projects with eligible costs of $100 million or less.
The department encouraged states and local governments to submit applications as quickly as possible. Planning grant applications are due June 15, while Bridge Project grant applications are due June 29.
