WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Forest Service, under the Department of Agriculture, has released the final environmental impact statement and draft record of decision for the proposed Resolution Copper Mining Project. These announcements mark a significant step in advancing domestic mineral independence and economic growth, aligning closely with national priorities to reduce reliance on foreign imports and enhance critical supply chains.
“The Resolution Copper Project is a prime example of how we can harness America’s abundant resources to fuel growth in rural America, reduce our dependence on foreign imports, and strengthen our supply chains,” stated USDA Secretary Brooke L. Rollins.
The project, proposed by Resolution Copper LLC, includes an underground copper mine on land currently within the Tonto National Forest. Congress authorized the required land transfer for the project under the 2014 National Defense Authorization Act. However, this transfer can only take effect on August 19, 2025, or 60 days following official notice in the Federal Register, based on a U.S. District Court of Arizona ruling issued earlier this month.
Economic projections for the project are substantial. The mine is expected to generate nearly 1,500 jobs with an annual payroll of $149 million. It also promises to provide between $80 million and $120 million in state and local tax revenue each year, alongside $200 million annually for the federal government.
The Resolution Copper initiative also supports President Trump’s directives to bolster domestic energy and mineral production through responsible resource development. It underscores efforts to establish stable energy and mineral infrastructure while securing critical materials vital to national defense supply chains.
The final environmental impact statement and related documents were published in the Federal Register on June 20 and are now accessible to the public for review. This milestone reflects the Administration’s continued commitment to fostering economic development in rural America while advancing the nation’s mineral independence and security.
