WASHINGTON, D.C. — Dave McCormick opened applications for congressional nominations to U.S. military service academies this week, beginning the annual process that determines which Pennsylvania students can compete for appointments to several of the nation’s federally funded officer-training institutions.
Students seeking admission to the United States Military Academy, United States Naval Academy, United States Air Force Academy, and United States Merchant Marine Academy are generally required to secure a nomination from a member of Congress as part of the admissions process.
The nomination system gives senators and House members influence over which candidates from their states and districts advance into the highly competitive academy appointment pipeline, which serves as a major commissioning source for U.S. military officers.
McCormick, a West Point graduate and Army veteran, said the process plays a central role in shaping future military leadership.
“Service academies produce some of the finest leaders this nation has ever seen, and the nomination process is a critical part of ensuring that tradition continues,” McCormick said.
Applicants must separately apply both to their academy of choice and for a congressional nomination.
The United States Coast Guard Academy does not require congressional nominations for admission.
