As the 2024 tax filing season rapidly approaches, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has launched a special Tax Professional Awareness Week starting today, January 8. The week is designed to assist tax professionals in preparing for the upcoming season and to start the year off on the right foot.
Tax Professional Awareness Week is the latest initiative by the IRS to support taxpayers and the tax community. Each year, millions of Americans enlist the help of tax professionals to prepare their federal tax returns and other filings.
“Tax professionals play a critical role in ensuring the integrity of our tax system,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “As we approach the 2024 tax season, this dedicated week underscores the essential part they play in assisting taxpayers and our nation.”
Many taxpayers eligible for refundable credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit, choose to seek the expertise of tax preparers to accurately file their returns. The IRS is urging taxpayers who need assistance to reach out to trusted tax professionals, including those affiliated with recognized national organizations.
In addition to paid professionals, the IRS also offers free basic tax return preparation to qualifying individuals through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs.
Throughout the week, the IRS will focus on several key issues frequently encountered by tax professionals. These topics include due diligence, Electronic Filing Identification Numbers (EFINs), Preparer Tax Identification Numbers (PTINs), e-filing, e-services, and identity theft.
The IRS will also host two webinars during the week: “Answering Your Frequently Asked Questions on Due Diligence” on Wednesday, January 10, and “Sailing Through the Rules of Refundable Tax Credits” on Friday, January 12. These webinars will provide further information on the resources, training, and tools available to tax professionals. Attendees can earn Continuing Professional Education credit for attending the live webinars.
In tandem with the IRS webinars, other training opportunities will be offered during Tax Professional Awareness Week. These include courses, seminars, or expos presented by members of the tax professional community, such as the Texas Society of CPAs, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Michigan.
