WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Friday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unveiled final allocations of nearly $724 million for competitive preparedness grants in Fiscal Year 2024. This funding is part of a broader strategy to fortify national resilience against evolving threats and natural disasters. A significant focal point of this announcement is the $454.5 million allocated to the Nonprofit Security Grant Program, marking a $149.5 million increase from the previous year. This program aims to bolster security for faith-based and nonprofit organizations facing heightened risk.
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas emphasized the collaborative nature of these efforts, stating, “The Department of Homeland Security is proud to work together with our federal, state, local, tribal, territorial and other partners to increase our nation’s resilience in a constantly evolving threat environment.” The comprehensive grant package, totaling nearly $1.98 billion for FY 2024, includes both competitive and non-competitive funding.
Key allocations include $81 million for Operation Stonegarden, enhancing border security coordination among law enforcement entities, and $13.5 million through the Tribal Homeland Security Grant Program to bolster preparedness initiatives for Tribal Nations. The Port Security Grant Program and the Transit Security Grant Program have been allocated $90 million and $83.7 million, respectively, to safeguard critical infrastructure from potential terrorist threats.
Non-competitive grants, announced earlier this year, comprise $373.5 million for the State Homeland Security Program and $553.5 million under the Urban Area Security Initiative, targeting high-threat regions. Additionally, the Emergency Management Performance Grant provides $319.55 million to support emergency management capabilities at various government levels.
DHS seeks to provide a cohesive, strategic approach to national security and disaster readiness, ensuring communities across the United States are equipped to respond to and recover from crises effectively.
