WASHINGTON, D.C. — Train riders along the Northeast Corridor could see faster, more reliable service under a $4.7 billion federal investment aimed at upgrading stations, tracks, and key infrastructure.

What This Means for You

  • Rail stations like New York Penn and Washington Union may see upgrades
  • Improvements aim to reduce delays and improve service reliability
  • Funding could expand or enhance intercity rail options

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced the funding for projects along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, the nation’s busiest passenger rail line connecting major cities from Washington to Boston.

Officials said the investment will focus on modernizing rail hubs, improving infrastructure, and streamlining operations.

Where the Money Will Go

The funding will support upgrades to major stations, including New York Penn Station and Washington Union Station, as well as improvements to rail bridges and other critical infrastructure.

Officials said these upgrades are intended to address aging systems and improve safety and efficiency along the corridor.

“The Northeast Corridor is the busiest and most complex rail line in America,” said Federal Railroad Administration Administrator David Fink.

How the Program Works

The funding is being distributed through the Partnership-Northeast Corridor program, part of a broader federal grant effort to improve intercity passenger rail.

The program is designed to reduce maintenance backlogs, improve performance, and expand rail service where possible.

Projects must be included in a federal inventory of eligible Northeast Corridor improvements to qualify for funding.

Application Process

Transportation officials said applications for funding are open and must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

Expected Impact

Officials said the investment is intended to improve travel for passengers while supporting economic activity tied to rail transportation.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the upgrades are part of a broader effort to modernize U.S. rail infrastructure.

“This is part of President Trump’s agenda to build infrastructure that improves the lives of American families,” Duffy said.

Next Steps

Federal officials will review submitted proposals and award funding to qualifying projects.

The department said the goal is to accelerate improvements along the corridor and address long-standing infrastructure challenges that contribute to delays and service disruptions.
