HARRISBURG, PA — State Representative Chris Pielli’s House Bill 355, aimed at protecting children from abuse by those in positions of authority, passed the Pennsylvania House of Representatives unanimously on Tuesday. The legislation seeks to introduce sentencing enhancements for mandated reporters convicted of sexual assault, emphasizing accountability for individuals entrusted with safeguarding children.
“We tell our children they can trust their teachers, police officers, and others in positions of authority. How can we allow adults who break that sacred trust to benefit from institutional leniencies they do not deserve?” said Pielli. “This legislation is a step in the right direction.”
Mandated reporters, including educators, law enforcement, clergy, and child care providers, are legally bound to report suspected child abuse. H.B. 355 would hold such individuals to a higher standard, ensuring that courts consider their abuse of authority during sentencing.
Pielli expressed gratitude to those who supported the bill, including Representative Joe D’Orsie of York County, who introduced the legislation in a previous session, and Grace, a courageous young survivor whose story helped underscore the importance of the bill’s passage.
The legislation now moves to the state Senate for consideration. Pielli emphasized the importance of ensuring children are protected from adults who exploit their positions of trust, calling it a vital step toward justice and accountability.
